Holiday List: Desktop and Mobile Computers

In preparation for the holiday season, there are people shortlisting a selection of computers to buy or upgrade to. The list may include desktop, laptop and tablet/slate computers. Here's a rundown of some of the popular items to choose from.

Desktop
Desktop computers are what TVs are to your entertainment room. They are now as common as any appliance in many households worldwide.

ASUS has two top of the line desktops targeting gamers and multi-media enthusiasts. Essentio CG1330 has AMD Phenom II X6 and Essentio CM5675 has Intel Core i5. Both has SATA 1TB HD and runs Windows 7 64-bit. HP Pavilion Elite HPE-490t series is a high performance desktop that competes head-on with Dell Studio XPS 9100.

For all-in-ones, HP TouchSmart 600 Quad Series top the specs chart when compared to Dell Inspiron One 2305 and Gateway One ZX6800 Series. If you want style, there's the beautiful Sony VAIO Signature Gold Limited Edition J. It even has a Blu-ray player built in! Sony VAIO J Series sport many you-can-show-off-in-the-living-room colors and designs.

Of course, the list won't be complete without mentioning Alienware. Alienware manufactures the best liquid cooled desktops in an exclusive industrial design. Considered to be a top grade gaming computer, top of the line includes the Area-51 ALX.

Laptop
Laptops and notebooks can be as powerful as desktops nowadays, but in a very mobile design. There are interesting models out and this will be the focus of this list.

Asus NX90Jq is a beautiful multi-media laptop designed by David Lewis of the Bang & Olufsen fame. Apple MacBook Air may be considered by some as a netbook, but the power put in to this beautiful beast can match many notebooks out in the market. Most laptops would have the same classic designs although luxury models are available via Dell's Adamo and HP's ENVY.

For gamers, I can't believe I would put Asus and Alienware in the same paragraph. There's the Asus G73Jw and the Alienware M17x to choose from. Both have industrial body designs but differ greatly in price. I suppose you can guess it right, Alienware is the more expensive brand.

Tablet/Slate
The tablet/slate form factor gets a boost after Apple released the iPad which now competes with Samsung Galaxy Tab and Archos tablets in the consumer market.

The HP Slate 500 running Windows 7, which targets the business users, is now available and priced at $799. RIM, recently announced, for release next year, the Blackberry Playbook which target business users as well. Come to think of it, who's stopping consumers to get them?

Interesting future models include the Dell Inspiron Duo which is due for unveiling next week and the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 which is delayed to release next year. The HP Slate with WebOS, due next year, targets consumers.

Computer models get upgraded every 1 or 2 years in line with CPU manufacturers' release of more powerful processors (thanks to Moore's Law). Desktops allow owners to upgrade parts (CPU, memory cards, graphic card, monitor, keyboard, etc.) instead of the whole PC. Laptops, tablets and slates can be upgraded as often as your wallet would allow you. It is not uncommon to upgrade every 3 years although there's nothing wrong with maximizing your investment to up to 5 years.

That's it. There are technologies you can immediately get now and there are some to wait for. The best choice depends on your lifestyle and on your budget. Try out these computers in stores before you buy. Remember, there may be cheap deals on-line so don't forget to check out the Store.
