Holiday List: Everyday Mobile Products

In preparation for the holiday season, there are people shortlisting a selection of mobile products to buy or upgrade to. These mobile products may include phones, portable media players and e-readers. Here's a rundown of some of the popular items to choose from.

Super Smart Phones
There's iPhone 4, Blackberry Torch, Samsung i9000 Galaxy S (Samsung Captivate) and HTC HD7 (or, preferably, Samsung Omnia 7, which is unfortunately not available in the US).

iPhone has proven dominance in the past 4 or so years. Blackberry gained much in US at around the same time. Android-based phones followed suit and moves up to third place. The recent addition are the Windows Phone 7-based devices (GSM only; CDMA to follow next year) which released to stores this week.

Note that in the US, these devices are usually tied up with a network offering subsidized prices with a contract.

Portable Media Players
Could there be anything other than an iPod Touch? Of course there are! There's still Zune HD, Sony Walkman E-Series and Archos Vision. For the ultra-compact, you can choose iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle or Archos 14 Vision.

Zune HD is actually a very good product that originally used the Metro UI concept now fully employed by Windows Phone 7. Archos' products, on the other hand, are just as beautiful as the competition, perhaps, even better, not to mention far, far cheaper.

e-Readers
In the e-Reader category, there are basically Kindle and Nook, although Sony's Reader can be a contender. Barnes & Noble announced a Nook Color recently to be released to stores on November 19, 2010 for around $250. A color-screened Kindle may follow as soon as Amazon's supplier for the Kindle's display, e-Ink, makes their color technology viable.

As for the iPad, there are doubts about its screen which may not be as eye-friendly for lengthy reading. In addition, dedicated e-readers are considerably cheaper than the iPad, which starts at around $500.

That's it. There are technologies you can immediately get now and there are some to wait for. The best choice depends on your lifestyle and on your budget. Try out these devices in stores before you buy. Remember, there may be cheap deals on-line so don't forget to check out the Store.
