Apple Watch Series 3 Has Something Big

Apple released the 3rd-generation of the Apple Watch in September 2017. It's available with GPS only or with GPS+cellular via eSIM. This article is interested in the latter, and As I See Tech thinks it's going to be big!

Apple Watch Series 3's eSIM implementation changes the way cellular can be integrated into devices. By design, the Apple Watch can be used to place and receive calls. Although earlier implementations rely on an actual iPhone, the Apple Watch 3 doesn't. By simply synching the device's eSIM with the owner's SIM account, the Apple Watch can be truly used as an extension, sharing the same number and data plan.

Thus, you can leave your iPhone at home, just wear the Apple Watch and you are good to go! You have all the basic features you need to make and get calls, access some data consuming services, and whatever's important right ahead.

But that's not what's really important. What's important here is that your same account is sync'd to your watch. You don't have to purchase a new SIM account. You can use what you have and that's it!

Do you see now why As I See Tech thinks this is big? Let me repeat that: "same account". Get it?

Exactly! Apple just found a clever way to share a SIM account across devices! You don't really need a new account per device. It would actually be smartest if you can just extend that same account to your devices, which can be a watch, a tablet, a laptop/notebook or what have you.

Device manufacturers should buy in to this approach and design their cellular-ready devices like so. Letting devices share the same cellular account that their customers may already have makes absolute sense! The best use case right now are wearables. However, I don't see any reason why it can't be an option with non-wearables like tablets, or even cars, for example.

Carriers should find the brilliance of this design and what it can do for their businesses. By supporting extension devices to the same account, it's an instant win-win! Although it might seem like this technology can affect sales of new line accounts, the real deal here is the fact that accounts can be maximized to their full potential, with the higher possibility of upgrades and top tier plans getting sold. Likewise, infrastructural investments are more efficiently consumed and new levels of customer satisfaction can be achieved.

The new Apple Watch Series 3 GPS+cellular model's eSIM innovation challenges the current business models and offerings with regards to supporting cellular beyond the smartphone. Yes, I just said it! Apple innovated here and it should not go unnoticed. By enabling SIM accounts to be extended, business and consumer investments are maximized effectively, efficiently and, I must say, quite smartly. Cellular everywhere has a new model and, in case you didn't notice, Apple just started it.
