Apple's eSIM Technology Done Right

Apple SIM has gone a long way from just enabling data to now include making and getting calls as exemplified by the new Apple Watch Series 3. As I See Tech thinks this is big, and you should too!

Apple Watch Series 3 has a GPS+cellular model that allows users to sync their existing SIM account. This effectively makes the Apple Watch a true extension of the iPhone. The eSIM registration does not need a new SIM account to be purchased. The customer's existing SIM account is extended to the Apple Watch. It doesn't only allow the Apple Watch to connect to the Internet. It also allows the Apple Watch to be the phone as well.

This is an Apple innovation done right! Although most devices with cellular are restricted to just data, enabling calls as well is the ultimate maturity of the technology. The days of data-only cellular in devices are numbered. Any device can be made call capable. Apple has started something big with their new Apple Watch and I truly hope that they (and other companies) continue with it in future devices including possible partnerships or ventures with smart wearables, smart speakers, cars, buses, trucks and even airplanes.

Imagine the possibilities. If a non-smartphone device can make use of the same eSIM technology, you can use your existing SIM account to enable new ways to consume your same plan for calls and data. High-end cameras that can also function as smartphones. Augmented and virtual reality goggles that can also function as smartphones. Cars and motorbikes with smartphone capabilities built-in. Smartphone rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Headphones and headsets that are also smartphones. Imagine leather wallets for electronic payments doubling as a flip smartphone. It can be everywhere! Ideas can be crazy hilarious, but it's still cellular calls and data anywhere and everywhere!

True calls+data beyond the smartphone? Oh, yes! Apple's innovation and its partner carriers that support it are breaking new ground. I want to see more of it. I'm sure we'll all see more of it... soon.
