Idea No. 2: Smartphone In Cars

Most modern cars would have audio, navigation and other apps via built-in console. The annoying part really is that these apps are not necessarily updated the same way that smartphone apps are. Well how about this then: why not remove the car's built-in console and let the customer dock a smartphone for audio, navigation and other apps for the car? Sounds good? Read on...

This can be standard or an option. Customers can choose to let the manufacturer install their standard consoles and peripherals, OR the customer can have the option to just get a dock for the smartphone. The docked smartphone replaces the car's console. With this option, the customer can be offered with the apps that are closely tied to the car's features like rear camera, sensor controls, automated locks/doors/windows, diagnostics, etc.

The good news? There should be no extra cost for built-in radio. There should be no extra cost for built-in navigation. Perhaps, the only thing you need to pay extra will be for manufacturer apps that may be specific to the car's model.

Through this design, the car's digital features can be easily updated just like any apps for the smartphone. Update the app for the smartphone, and the car's digital features are pretty much updated as well. Cheaper for the manufacturer and cheaper for the car owner as well.

This design also removes redundancy for smartphone owners. Hands-free calling and texting is built-in to the smartphone. Audio and music from a favorite app in the smartphone. Navigation is built-in to the smartphone. All available to the car at no extra cost to both the manufacturer and the car owner.

Of course, the smartphone would not be required to operate the car. This is important specially when the customer damages or loses the smartphone for some reason. The basics should remain intact to the car. For the most part, only digital convenience and lifestyle features can be fully delegated to the smartphone.

This solution is so simple, it should've been an option since the smartphone boom. There's is no luxury to a car that has features already available in a smartphone. It is just what it is: redundancy. Instead, offer this as an option and let the customer decide. Making cars smart don't need to be expensive. Simplify: let the smartphone add the smarts to the car.
