Idea No. 14: Merge Netflix and Vudu (UltraViolet)

Amazon's Prime Videos allows me to watch content from my Amazon Prime subscription, and to also buy/rent content not part of Prime. The convenience is beautiful. Now, I'm thinking, a brilliant competitor can be a merger of Netflix and Vudu. Right?

If not a corporate merger, then it can be a service integration. This option though can be more flexible. For example, Netflix can partner with Vudu and/or Microsoft's Movies & TV app and/or other similar businesses to enable content purchase/rent options. In this sense, Netflix, on top of its subscription content, also becomes a marketplace to find and compare prices from content sellers/renters.

The partnership can also be mutual and enabled both ways. For example, Netflix can list Vudu and/or Microsoft Movies & TV content, right? But also, Vudu can list Netflix content, and/or Microsoft Movies & TV can list Netflix content. Thus, Netflix can expand its availability and visibility to various apps that sell/rent content. In effect, Netflix becomes a subscription service available everywhere movies, TV and other video content are served. Not that Netflix needs it... but, why not?

If this happens, it no longer matters what app the user runs to access movies and TV. Whatever suddenly catches a user's fancy can be an instant money making machine. Within Netflix, the user can consume subscription content. If the user suddenly wants to buy/rent, there's no need to leave the app. Netflix's marketplace can let the user compare and choose the best deal. Now imagine within Vudu, the user can browse to buy/rent or find out if it's available in Netflix. The user stays in the Vudu app, and potential sales are ever present.

This is not just convenience. This is value-added service! By making Netflix available everywhere that movies and TV can be found immortalizes the brand's relevance. Likewise, by providing a marketplace to let users buy/rent content, Netflix strengthens its brand as the one stop shop... err... app for movies, TV and video content. Either way, its a win-win!
