Search and Mobile Network Wars

The month of February starts with hot news about competing products and technologies. Hot enough to spark a couple of wars! It's Google vs. Microsoft Bing on a search war; and, it's Verizon vs. AT&T on the mobile network war (over Apple's iPhone).

Google vs. Microsoft Bing
Google published their findings after an experiment which they claimed to prove that Microsoft Bing is stealing from Google's search results. Microsoft quickly retaliated by discrediting the claim and even the experiment itself.

Google's experiment seemed to show that Microsoft's Bing toolbar is stealing results from Google. Microsoft, however, explained that they are only gathering opt-in data from user activities and that these data are only one of the thousands of inputs that Bing could use to improve its search results. Google says Microsoft is cheating. Microsoft says they're products are working fine as designed.

The real score is that Microsoft Bing outsmarted Google. Microsoft needed a way to make Bing learn as fast as its competition is growing. Microsoft's solution to gather user activities was actually aggressively smart. In a short time, Bing was able to improve itself almost as good as Google is today... well at least in the US -- Google's local searches outside of the US can return far better results than Bing can.

Verizon vs. AT&T
iPhone now has two carriers in the US: AT&T and Verizon. Apple's exclusive contract with AT&T ended which opened the doors for Verizon to sell the iPhone. Apparently, a lot of Americans are not particular about surfing the Internet while on a voice call, which is one of those things that's not possible on Verizon. However, Verizon's iPhone can be used as a hotspot for up to 5 devices which can be a seller.

Apple's ads for iPhone brings AT&T and Verizon together by showing the things that are common to them because of what's built-in to the iPhone: apps, multimedia and FaceTime. On the other hand, Verizon ads for the iPhone literally attack AT&T.

All the fuzz for a single smartphone brand? Oh, Apple iPhone, there are so many things you can do!

Well... if the first week of February could be so exciting, how much more in the coming weeks? Let's keep watch then, shall we?
