What iPhone Started with the Touchscreen

When iPhone was first launched in 2007, mobile phone manufacturers were already experimenting on various form factors including touch screens. The iPhone was not the first touchscreen phone. There had been many models from different manufacturers worldwide already offering touchscreen units. However, it was when Apple launched the iPhone that the touchscreen form factor truly kicked-off.

For a company venturing in to a new business already dominated by the likes of Motorola, Nokia, Blackberry, Sony and Samsung, coming up with a mobile phone devoid of a querty keyboard or a keypad was considered brave, bold and suicidal!

The real question at that time was, "Is the market ready?" Apparently, the market did not disappoint. The iPhone was a staggering success despite it being sold in the US locked to only one carrier: AT&T. Consider also that the same business model was applied in most countries around the world where Apple also launched the iPhone. There was no denying that the iPhone altered the mobile design landscape, it absolutely changed the "game" and it gloriously won the competition "the first time around".

Although Apple did not invent the touchscreen technology itself, their release of iPhone started the explosion of the touchscreen's popularity, booming at an unprecedented rate and scale. From then onwards, Apple was the company to beat... or at least to learn and copy from. Not surprisingly, other manufacturers followed suit by releasing their own versions of the touchscreen mobile experience.

Today, we have a growing list of touchscreen mobile devices and gadgets, not just mobile phones. It's a fast expanding trend. I think it's good news! And  I attribute this progress to the success of the iPhone.
