Best Tech of 2010: Digital Cameras and Photography

2010 has been a great year for technology in general affecting various sectors and cultural groups around the world. Here is As I See Tech's rundown of the best technologies for cameras and photography in general that made remarkable achievements in 2010...

The best Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic Lumix point-and-shoots released this year offer 10x to 12x zooms. Most interesting is Sony's 10x zoomer H55 Cyber-shot which features their unique sweep panorama technology.

Pro-sumer cameras from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic Lumix and Sony offer zooms from 20x to 35x. Canon SX30 IS and Nikon Coolpix P100 are the best in class offering HD video capture as well.

The dSLR news makers this year are Canon EOS-60D and Nikon D7000. Both have competitive CMOS sensors and HD video capturing capabilities. Reviews and comparisons usually vary depending on the reviewer's preference --  which is expected if you consider the fact that "Canon vs. Nikon" is really a matter of loyalty.

Panasonic and Olympus PEN are the pioneers in pushing the Micro Four Thirds system. Sony NEX lines (Alpha-series) are the newest players in the compact system category. The biggest news maker in the compact system category this year, however, is the beautiful and gorgeous Leica M9 "Titanium". Leica had a limited run of only 500 "Titanium" units. Leica M9s boast of full-frame CCD image sensors and 35mm results.

FujiFilm released FinePix Real 3D W3 this year, which is a worthy successor to the previous year's W1, the first compact 3D camera that does not require special glasses for viewing the shots. In the same tradition, W3 is the first compact camera to offer 3D HD (720p) video capture and playback that does not require 3D glasses.

Perhaps, one of the biggest development to the imaging industry this year is the standardization of JPEG XR, formerly known as Microsoft's Windows Media Photo and HD Photo. Microsoft, who developed the technology, is already creating software products that support JPEG XR. As a new standard, adoption and implementations from camera manufacturers is expected in the coming months and/or years.
