Windows Phone 7 Progress Report

Microsoft finally has an official statement on how much Windows Phone 7 units have been pushed to retailers: 1.5 million in 6 weeks. Meanwhile, their Marketplace have grown from 1,000 apps since launch to 4,000 apps worldwide. The reactions are mixed but, as Microsoft puts it, the progress is as expected.

1.5 million, though, doesn't mean it's the number of units sold. They have yet to release that number with a breakdown of how many are from the US and how many are from other countries. Compared to the numbers from iPhone and Android-based phones, Microsoft still has a long way to go.

The growth of the Marketplace for Windows Phone 7 on the other hand  is a good indication of support from developers. From 1,000 apps to 4,000 apps in just two months is a remarkable achievement. This is the real good news. The more support Microsoft gets from developers, the wider Windows Phone 7's potential reach can be.

Windows Phone 7 was initially released in the US to two carriers: AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon and Sprint are expected in 2011. On launch, major Windows Phone handset manufacturers include HTC, Samsung, LG and Dell with models released worldwide. Recently, there are rumors of Microsoft in serious talk with Nokia.

Updates to Windows Phone 7 are anticipated in 2011. There is a lot of room for improvements. It is expected that the first update would include copy/paste and better multi-tasking support for third-party developers (current multi-tasking support is limited and available mostly to Microsoft published software only). Also sought are more foreign language support, universal (voice) search, better customization features and more social networking functionalities.

Meanwhile, there's still no Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7... I don't know. I just have to say it...
