Best Tech of 2010: e-Readers and Other Must Have Portable Devices

2010 has been a great year for technology in general affecting various sectors and cultural groups around the world. Here is As I See Tech's rundown of the best mobile technologies in general that made remarkable achievements in 2010...

Amazon Kindle is the bestselling and, perhaps, the best e-reader in the US. Amazon Kindle competes in the US with the Barnes & Noble's Nook, which recently released the NOOKcolor. With extended features and functionalities, it won't be surprising if the NOOKcolor becomes one of the best Android tablet real soon.

Elsewhere, outside the US, there's Sony Digital Reader PRS-350 Pocket and PRS-650 Touch editions. Amazon Kindle and Sony Readers use eInk. There are some features with the Sony Reader that can be better than the Kindle. However, Sony Readers are more expensive. Value for money, I think that the NOOKcolor can still win over Sony Readers in the US. Meanwhile, Sony's world outside the US is really a much bigger market potential.

Flip Video minoHD is one of the the hottest craze this year in video cams. Although Sony did release their own version with the same form factor, nothing beats the original Flip.

GPS devices in 2010 are pretty much the same. There's not much progress in the overall design and services. Worst case, they're just getting unnecessarily more expensive. Nice to have? Must have? It really depends on your needs. Practically speaking, you'll get the same value from the earlier cheaper models that usually go on sale online.

If you're in a hurry to experience 4G (or technically, pre-4G), you can get them via "4G" USB modems. They are usually tied up with a network. In the US, Sprint is the most aggressive in marketing pre-4G as "4G". The most anticipated, of course, would be the "real 4G". Verizon has started rolling out 4G LTE in the US targeting nationwide coverage by 2013.
