Technology To Bring Us Back To Life

When I saw Microsoft's "Really?" ads for Windows Phone 7, it made me think about what technology can do to many of us. There are a lot of reasons to be enamored by the new things that we can experience from a technology that we can take with us anywhere we go. However, if those reasons could mean missing out on life, then I suppose we should reflect and start to re-think our priorities.

Supposedly, technology should help make our lives easier. In reality, technology just allowed us to do more tasks in less time... sometimes even some of them at the same time.

Doing more in less time does not immediately translate to valuable accomplishments. You don't read all e-books about art and come out instantly as an artist. You don't read through all your friend's tweets or on-line status updates and then come out to be everyone's best friend. It's like doing so much for nothing. Instead, let technology work for you, then get back and truly accomplish more in life.

Focus can make the most out of your efforts, but if that focus can cost you to miss on the more valuable things in life, then there's an unfortunate imbalance that needs to be checked. Consider the scene where the father's affixed to his mobile device missing out on a beautiful chance to bond with his son in the park. We sometimes focus on the wrong things causing us to lose more than just time.

No one can enforce your priorities to you. Rather, you must enforce your priorities to yourself.  It's like using your mobile device's camera to capture a moment, sharing it immediately to a friend, typing in a short text message and then sending it as soon as the device starts to play your favorite music... all while you're driving! Technology can distract us from what's really important, but we can always be in control.

The new "Really?" ads from Microsoft are eye-openers. No one wants to be slaves of technology. We could let it blend in to our lives but we should never allow it to take control. Offering a technology to get things done faster so that you can immediately get back to life is a strong value proposition. We are human after all... and technologies that value humanity by design are worth everyone's appreciation and support.
