What Tech To Expect in 2011?

2010 celebrated a lot of announcements for new technologies for 2011. From new computer designs to more green-oriented technologies, 2011 is an exciting year for new products that can truly help improve our lives. Here's a quick list of what I have so far...

Computers
This just got to be first in my list: Acer's Iconia.  The Iconia was voted as one of ten favorite 'Last Gadgets Standing' at Annual CES Competition. The Iconia is a "touchbook" featuring a dual (multi-)touchscreen notebook form factor. I could expect more similar models from more manufacturers in 2011.

With the release of Apple MacBook Air in 2010, I think the netbook category is officially and thankfully dead. We should be seeing the "netbook" die peacefully and quietly in 2011. Meanwhile, I wonder how  Google Chrome OS would fair if it gets released this year...

With the success of many tablets in 2010, more tablets are expected in 2011. One of the more exciting products already announced include RIM's Blackberry Playbook for business users and HP Slate with WebOS. With NOOKcolor's expected upgrade to Android 2.2 this year, the e-reader may be categorized as a tablet, although B&N has no plan to activate the Android Market on the device.

Mobile Phones
In the US, 4G has been marketed as Sprint 4G (WiMax), T-Mobile 4G (HSPA+) and Verizon 4G LTE (LTE). These offerings are technically pre-4G which are not meeting the IMT-Advanced criteria of 100Mbps - 1 Gbps as defined by ITU-R. When WiMax 2 and LTE Advanced gets rolled out, that's when we can really say 4G is here. 2011 is a target year for the real 4G.

Super smartphones are the heroes of mobile phones in 2010 and they should continue to be so in 2011. Most anticipated for the iPhone would be the coming of iPhone CDMA which is expected to get exclusive partnership with Verizon in the US. Windows Phone 7 is expecting an update early 2011 possibly including the copy/paste feature, more multi-tasking support and more multi-lingual support. In addition, Windows Phone 7 may also come to Verizon this year, which can also mean an equal support from Sprint. Meanwhile, more devices are expected to have Android 2.3 built-in in 2011. Android 2.3 highlights a lot of improvements for users and developers.

Hybrids And Full-Electric Vehicles
HEV's should continue to flourish in 2011 with models already announced in 2010 such as the unfortunately too expensive Chevy Volt (a plug-in hybrid); an updated Toyota Prius; some new lines from Ford, Hyundai and Honda; and even from luxury car manufacturers like Audi, Lexus, Mercedes Benz and Lincoln. Although still awaiting national infrastructural support, full-electric vehicles are also expected to be released in select markets. Check out this list of full-electrics for 2011.
