Experience with PS3 Move

The Playstation Move is Sony's answer to Nintendo's Wiimote and Microsoft's Kinect. I've tried playing PS3 Move with one of its flagship game called the Sports Champions. The technology and the game are amazing, fun and simply (highpitch) awesome!

PS3 Move System
The Playstation Move controller has a unique shape. It's a slender cylindrical control with a spherical "bulb" on top that lights up when active. It is used in combination with the Playstation Eye which is the camera connected to PS3 that would detect the user's motion with the Playstation Move. The Playstation Move grips well in the hand and feels lighter than the Wiimote. The controls are also simplified when compared to the traditional Playstation Controller. The top of the Move has a small Playstation button; a larger main Playstation Move button; and the usual square, triangle, X and circle buttons. The bottom of the controller features a trigger. There are no navigation buttons -- the user's movements with the Move in front of the Eye is enough to navigate. Like the dual shock models of the traditional controller, the Move also has game programmable haptics.

Sports Champions
Like Wii Sports, Sports Champions demonstrates what can be done with the Move. The sports featured in the game include disc golf, archery, gladiator duel, volleyball, bocce and table tennis. All games can be played by the user with only one Move controller. Some games can be played with two Move controllers in hand and should allow the user to play more realistically in terms of doing the proper stance, form and movements.

Disc Golf
The disc golf mimics the real disc golf sports rules and game play in many ways. There are only 3 discs to choose from: the driver (300 ft. range), the mid-range (200 ft. range) and the putter (100 ft. range). There are three 6 holes courses of varying difficulties available but an 18 holes mode combines the three 6 holes courses in one continuous play. The best addition to the game are the slow-mos which add a lot of excitement to potential and actual great shots. Up to 4 players can play the game.

Bocce
Bocce is a strategy ball game that can be played by 2 or 4 players. Although you don't actually feel the weight of the balls, the game can give you a sense of the weight somehow. There are many courts to choose from with varying levels of difficulty. Played best with a lot of thrash talking.

Gladiator Duel
Gladiator duel can be played with one or two controllers in hand. This is perhaps the most fanciful "sport" in the game. It is also the best one to really get you sweating! The characters are generally responsive to the user's movements with the Move. Unfortunately, there are only two venues to choose from. But overall, the game is intense and could be an easy favorite by first timers.

Archery
Archery is one of the best game to play with two motion controllers in hand. Doing so allows the user to do the real proper stance and form of archery. The challenges are well designed for competing with another archer.

Table Tennis
Table tennis is an almost realistic and an almost fanciful game that's easy to love. Players' hand motions with the Move are clearly detected by the Eye. Although some motions can be detected oddly and can be confusing specially for first timers. I think this game is best played in a larger room so that the players' movements sideways, forward and aft the camera can be interpreted properly. The table tennis in PS3 Sports Champions can be more realistic than the version from Nintendo's Wii Sports Resort.

Volleyball
Volleyball is... OK. It can be played by up to 4 players. I personally don't like this much. I like the real sports per se, but the version here and the game play overall doesn't really get it much. It's generally boring and unrealistic. If you ask me, I think it could've been better if they tried basketball instead... and I don't even play basketball!

Playstation Move is fun and opens up a lot of possibilities. Playing Sports Champions allows you to imagine how it would be like with other games. PS3+Move is pretty much like Nintendo Wii, but the PS3 console's power are utilized so you can get better graphics and better responsiveness. The entire Move system allows for the detection of the controller's elevation and the user's sideway, forward and aft movements in front of the Eye. These add more dimensions to the gaming experience. PS3+Move promises a lot of potentials and could perhaps be the best upgrade made by Sony since PS3. Kudos!
