Part 2: Can Technology Really Make Our Life Simpler?

The cellphone, as the cellular phone was later called, spread like news! Everyone was willing to pay the extra dollars for the convenience of making calls as desired... and the inconvenience of getting calls when and where not desired. There were calls on the street. There were calls in the train. There were calls in the bus. There were calls in the meeting. There were calls in the theater. There were calls in the restroom...

Yet, there were more to cellphones than just making calls. There was also texting via SMS which later added features to attach picture, audio and/or video via MMS. That explained why some people were staring more often on their cellphones while walking... and, unfortunately, also while driving. Some were just reading. Some were just typing. And still some were just staring blankly at their cellphones waiting for the next text message to arrive... while driving at freaking 65 mph on US I-80!

Texting is in the news! The Philippines claimed to be the texting capital of the world. That claim was soon followed by India and then, not surprisingly, by China. The US started to catch on.

In addition to the annoying person conducting a meeting in the elevator using a cellphone, the rest of the passengers were clicking and beeping on their respective cellphones to send a text message about the annoying person who was conducting a meeting in the elevator using a cellphone. Meanwhile, you were far ahead of them. As the Internet started to boom, it was already reaching your brand new smart phone.

Your mobile phone has gone smart! In addition to using it for calling and texting, you also have the Internet and a host of other features. There are also two types of calls already: voice calls and video calls. Your smart phone is a "swiss knife" of functionalities: it has cameras, a multi-media player, game console features, FM radio, GPS, TV, a flashlight, a foldable beach chair, a pull-out tent, a retractable light saber and a partridge in a pear tree.

Meanwhile, laws were written against driving while using the cellphone. Security concerns were raised about lost or stolen mobile devices. Schools, banks, organizations and companies reviewed policies, rules and ethics on cellphone use. Lawsuits were filed against people making too much noise while talking on their cellphones. Crimes were planned using cellphones. Crimes were fought using cellphones. The small device was shaping the world!
