Part 3: Can Technology Really Make Our Life Simpler?

As the population of smart phone owners continue to grow, the smart phone designs and models continue to grow in numbers as well. The smart phone is fast becoming like a computer, but in a small form factor. It's still primarily a phone, but even that would soon change...

Mobile broadband Internet is allowing you to watch streaming videos and radio services using your smart phone... in HD! You can even create videos, upload and share them using your smart phone.

Applications and services targeting the mobile market also started to flourish. App-centric phone models began to roll out. There were apps available to do almost everything. There were productivity apps, tools and utilities; various games and games about games; e-book readers; content apps from popular on-line publishers; toss a coin app for heads or tails; spin a bottle app for truth or dare; light a lighter app for that dramatic moment in concerts; and even apps for the pure intent and purpose of playing pranks on other people -- for example, there were hundreds of apps dedicated to the ubiquitous sounds of farts published in all their flatulent glory, some of which drawing in serious amounts in US$ sales!

On-line services have reached the smart phone! Social networking was changing the way people communicate. Instant messaging started to complement texting. Micro-blogging was a big hit! Some guy with 500 million friends made a few enemies...

Now you are in your living room, which size doesn't matter anymore since you don't really need that much space. You can sit on the couch and get everything that you need. The smart phone is an extension of your computer. You get regular updates from work, friends and even non-friends. You make/answer calls, send/reply messages and even watch full-length movies through your phone. The couch potato has been re-defined. Who needs the remote now?

Life is simpler. Or is it? Is it simpler because now the phone always goes where you go? Is it simpler because you can do many things using one small device that fits in your pocket? For the most of us, technology can make our lives "simpler". However, simpler doesn't mean you are doing less. What it really means is that it is allowing you to do more tasks at a given time.

Today, you can vacuum the carpet while waiting for the washing machine, dryer and the dishwasher to finish running. You can cook your dinner following the instructions from a streaming HD video of the recipe while the TV reports about the dangers of distractions in the kitchen, which you didn't hear because you were talking to your friend on the phone through your Bluetooth headset as the new blender blends your celery and parsley. You can browse the Internet, check your e-mail while blogging and conference-chatting with your friends using your favorite instant messenger.

Life is simpler because, with technology, you can accomplish more. The multi-tasking computer and smart phone are influencing us to multi-task as well. So many things to do, so little time? Well, in the modern world, that really depends on how much CPU power and memory you have in your device.

Life is not simpler because technology simplified it. Technology simply re-defines what it can mean to making life simpler. As technology advances and continues to change, so does our definition of a simple life.
