When Steve Jobs Speaks...

I just read a transcript of Steve Job's recent speech delivered while celebrating Apple's recent $20 billion quarter news. There were some truths to his statements, but mostly, they were direct attacks to Apple's competitors.

It's not unusual for a company to make compelling statements about its competitors. However, it should never be taken lightly -- specially when it could potentially affect the confidence of your customers, partners and stakeholders. I personally call this "acid marketing". A company drops an "acid". It could corrupt everything it touches as it spreads, unless someone would do something to neutralize the acid. By the time all of the acid has been neutralized, it is possible that the damages already done by the acid are irreversible.

An acid was dropped by Steve Jobs to paint an Apple favored pitch in mobile phone and tablet sales. Acids were dropped by Steve Jobs on Google and their mobile OS, Android. An acid was dropped by Steve Jobs on RIM's Blackberry Playbook and other 7" tablets on their way to the market..

Not surprisingly, some companies attacked by Steve Jobs in his rant acted up -- and we could expect all of them to have a word or two. Their responses are clues of the mood that is being set for the holidays up to next year when most of the new products already in line would be released. We should expect the competition against Apple to be the most fierce the industry would ever see -- a war to last up to 2012 to say the least!

As soon as these acid marketing content reached the Internet, Google and RIM posted back their responses. It's damage control time! Google's initial response was a bit misguided. RIM's response was the most serious of course and could perhaps be the best strategy in order to neutralize the acid: discredit Steve Jobs' claims for Apple.

Apple has been doing great with a $20 billion quarter to boast this year. It is not an excuse to resort to acid marketing. In fact there is no need for it. But, perhaps, that's just how Steve Jobs celebrate.

Here's a partial transcript of the rant...
